Artificial intelligence looms as yet another disruption in the world of publishing, with a suite of Siris marrying natural language generation with big data to craft stories of laser specificity. And that rise in “machine-assisted narrative” is on top of all the other assaults on professional journalists, from paid influencer posts to ghosted Instagram stories. Yet emotionally resonant, character-driven, authentic writing is still thriving online (and, to a degree, in print). This back-to-basics boot camp session will explore what a magazine story (of any length) can do that content marketing and AI algorithms can’t, or won’t.
